The project is on its way. I have already had three sessions with the girls and so far everything is great. In the first session I taught the girls how to write short stories, this was followed by an activity where every girl was given a story board and some random clippings with which they had to write a story on.
They came up with some great stories which they presented in the next session after I had taught them how to write a book report. I am going to type up the stories and post them up one by one. I am currently dealing with 12 girls, thats 2 more than I expected but it's alright. They all seem keen on what they are learning and are giving the project 100% of their effort.
I am really enjoying myself and I have taken loads of pictures which I am yet to post up. We have changed meeting dates from Thursday & Friday every week to Wednesday and Thursday as some of the girls have other academic commitments to attend to on Friday. We are meeting tomorrow for the summary session and I am looking forward to it.
Till the next update.....Cheers

FIRST SESSION
I launched the project today (18/06/10) and it was great! I have a good set of girls who are outgoing and very pro-active. Today, we had our first session which was the "get to know" session where I basically chatted with the girls and we played a few ice breaker games.
They are very enthusiastic about the project and this adds to my enthusiasium. I failed to launch the project yesterday because there was a time mix up and by the time I got to the school it was closing time. I have learnt my lesson from this experience and that is to always check to make sure that the time set is the actual time to start.
GIRL Intellect is starting next week and I have already prepared the things I need for the activities and I am looking forward to our next section. The profile forms have not been filled in yet but they should be by the end of next week and they will be posted on the profile page.
I will update the block after every sesseion to keep you posted on what we are doing and the progress made. So be sure to check the blog every Thursday and Friday of every week. If the schedule changes I will be sure to let you know.

THE LAUNCH
First let me start by appologizing for not updating the blog for the past few days. Even though I havent kept in touch I have been working hard on the project to ensure that the preparation is done perfectly.
With that said I am pleased to say that the project is ready for the launch. I have purchased all materials needed and finished with all handouts. The school I am starting with is Bambino High school and I will post it's profile on the schools page next week.
We have agreed to launch it on the 17th of June 2010 and the girls have been identified. Once they sign their profiles I will post up their names. I am glad this has all come together beautifully and I hope you will keep track of my progress.

TASKS COMPLETED FOR PROJECT (5/06/10)
Today was pretty hectic. I went into town to look for price estimates for the stationery and other things for the project. I got them all and I have drawn up the budget and secured the funding for it, so that's done. I just need to go back into town some time next week to go and buy all the things I need.
I have also finished all the handouts that will be needed for the project and i'm glad that's over and done with. All that's left to be done before the preparation is done is the activities for individual sessions and the time schedule for it.
I'll be working on these loose ends next week.

TASKS COMPLETED FOR PROJECT (4/06/10)
Today I managed to complete two tasks and those were coming up with the profile form draft and coming up with the speech handouts. In terms of the handouts i just have one more which is the presentation handout.
I also now have to research and find learning materials for the proposal and report writing handouts. Those I am planning to do tomorrow.
That's about it.

TASKS COMPLETED FOR PROJECT (3/06/10)
Today I met with the deputy principal of a certain school and discussed the project with him. He had graciously decided to help me with the project interms of helping me draw up the schedule and list of fun activities to add to the project.
We talked about the project launch and we are soon to set a date. The meeting was very productive and I got alot of very positive feedback from the school. They are quite excited for me to start and this has greatly encouraged and motivated me.
I am soon to arrange another meeting so that everything is finalized in terms of the activites and schedule. The launch might be in july or September depending on the school calender but the good thing is, it will definately be in the next couple of months.
When everything is finalised with the school, I will post up it's profile and the profiles of the girl's participating once they have been chosen. The main ting I had to do today was the meeting but there are still a few other tasks that i will do later on in the day. I will post them up in tomorrows blog update.

Today i spent most of my afternoon uploading the handouts that I am going to give to the girls during the project. I have published them on the handout page. I have completed all handouts except the speech and presentation ones which I am yet to do.
I have also set up an appointment with a Deputy head teacher of a school for a brain storming session in which will we come up with activities that will be easy and fun for the girls as well as educational in the terms of teaching them the things this project has set out to do.

TASKS COMPLETED FOR PROJECT (1/06/10)
Today was quite a long day. I begun working at 10am and I have almost finished the tasks i set out to do today inorder to move myself forward and closer to the launching date of GIRL GREATNESS. After searching the web a few days ago for information that I am going to use for the project I finally managed to gather and structure the infomation in a hand out form.
1.TASK ONE (IDENTIFY TEN YOUNG INFLUENTIAL AFRICAN WOMEN)
The biographies of these women are going to be used as case studies for the GIRL Aspire program. The girls will study and evaluate these womens profiles and discussions will be held to find out why these women are successful, what the girls think motivates these women. We will also evaluate how these women dealt with the challenges they faced and identify why they are considered influential and an inspiration to society.
The women I have chosen are:- 1.Isha Sesay (Journalist of Sierra leonean descent)
2.Mame Ramatoulaye Yade (French politian from Senegal)
3.Ayaan Hirsi Ali (Somali feminist)
4.Dr. Dambisa Moyo (Economist from Zambia)
5.Tumi Makagabo (Former CNN anchor from South Africa)
6.Pamela Jelimo (Keyan Athlete)
7.Femi Oke (Former CNN weather anchor from Nigeria)
8.June Sarpong MBE (English television presenter of ghanaian descent)
9.Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigerian Writer)
10.Thembi Thadzi (Student and former chair person of the national youth council of malawi)
Most of the personalities I got from a blog that rated most of them as africa's most influential women and ofcourse I had to put our own young personality i.e. Thembi Thadzi.
Apart from finding the personalities I also came up with the handouts on summary writing, note-making, debate conduction and preparation, research conduction and how to write book reports. I am soon to do the speech and presentation handouts and make the GIRL GREATNESS profile fill-in's for the girls. I will post the handouts for you all and once the project starts i will also post the girls' profiles.
That's the progress I made today.
I'll keep you posted as I go along.
