It was a beautiful summer day and I woke up to admire the warm sun stretching over the horizon. It was one of those days where one was just happy to sit back and enjoy the sheer fact that they were still alive. It was a day to feel the breeze gently cut through your hair and smile in delight as the sun’s rays draped you in their warm golden ambience. It really was a perfect day on Pearly lane Manor.
I decided to do into town; so I had a shower and ate my breakfast. When I was done I jumped into my bright red convertible. I was just about to leave when I remembered that I had forgotten my purse. My beautiful gold and black clasp bag which had an emerald embedded in it as a center piece surrounded by a string of clear cut diamonds.
I couldn’t leave without it so I jumped out of my car and dashed back to my room. I remember having left it on my desk but when I got there; the place of honor reserved for it was empty. I looked under the bed; the desk, my pillow and finally my closet which was pretty messy but my precious purse was gone.
I instinctively knew that only one person had to know where it was. I stormed out my room and went straight to my seven year old brothers room. I found him sitting on his unmade bed holding my purse.
“Give it here!” I shouted.
“No way” he said.
I tried to snatch it away from him but he maintained an iron grip on it. I tried shaking him; screaming at him and even begging but the heartless skunk wouldn’t listen. Then mum came in. She asked what all the noise was about. When she found out; she took the purse and said she was going to hide it.
Twenty minutes later she told us to go and look for it. We searched high and low; left and right but we still couldn’t find it. I nearly begun crying when the horrible brat let out a shout of glee and told me he had found it.
“We found it; we found it!” we danced around chanting. Then mum came out and smiled and told us that she knew we would find it. Happy that we had found it; I then took my brat of a little brother for a ride in town. We had a splendid day; we ate ice cream and fed bread crumbs to the birds in the park. I love my little brother because he taught me how to appreciate the finer things in life.

The wanted girl by Fiona Phiri
A long time ago; there once lived a beautiful and caring woman. She was loved by many people, one in particular was the prime minister of America. He loved her so much that he married and they became the most famous and loved couple in America.
The prime minister was the envy of many men and this was no secret. Everyone could see it, they could see it in the jealous looks that were flashed at him. They could see it from the hate mail and death threats he had received from obsessed stalkers.
Even with all this chaos surrounding their union, the prime minister never let it affect them. He never told her about the death threat and the incidents. He didn’t want her to know; he wanted her to be completely free of worry and anxiety.
It was because of her unawareness that the tragic incident happened. It was a warm sunny Saturday afternoon and she had just finished preparing their lunch when her husband’s bodyguard had walked into the kitchen and had tried to come onto her.
She let out a loud scream as he had grabbed her. Just then the prime minister came bursting into the kitchen alarmed by her scream. He rushed over to where they were standing and tried to apprehend the bodyguard but he violently pushed him aside and he stumbled and hit his head at the edge of the sink and slipped to the floor, his skull cracked open by the impact.
“Oh my gosh, you killed him” she wailed. The bodyguard looked at her with frightened eyes. He had just killed the prime minister and his wife was a witness to the crime. He grabbed the gun which he always carried and aimed it at her before he pulled the trigger.
He then aimed the gun to his temple and then pulled the trigger. His final thought had been how stupid he had been to have wanted her so much that he had caused all their deaths.

The true Lucy I never knew by Awurama Ng'oma
I watched her all the time, walking down the runway of the “Ultimate walk”. She was in every magazine I read. She was like a goddess in my eyes. Lucy McRoll, that was her name. I loved watching her walk down that runway. She had the perfect body, perfect fashion sense, perfect car, perfect life, she had the perfect everything.
Beyond all that make-up, the fashion and the icon we saw on the outside was an even better person. She was real and I loved that. I admired the fact that she didn’t try to hide her huge appetite as most people in her line of work did.
Everything was fine until she met the so called “love of her life”. She was happy at first or as the saying goes ‘head over heels’ in love with the guy. It was all perfect until that one night in Panama City. She and her boyfriend had had a huge argument which ended in a break-up.
She was terrible after that. She seemed to have lost a sense of herself, as if her ex-boyfriend had stripped away the very unique qualities that made her the “X” factor. She didn’t even walk the same on the runway.
She was so depressed that she couldn’t work her magic on the runway anymore. Frustrated with her lack of performance, the owner’s of “Ultimate Walk” fired her. Her life fell to shambles right n front of her. She had lost everything.
She started drinking and smoking and in the process of it all she lost her appetite. She soon became anorexic and died a little later. At this point she had already become nothing more than a disgrace to me.
Even though towards the end of her life she had become bad; I still felt a sense of empathy for her.
The magazines had brought out the angel in her but then again they had also contributed to her downfall.

The secret place by Liggae Kanongodza
There was once a girl called Tongeriner; she was a waitress at a restaurant that Bart usually dined at. Bart had been watching her for a while now. He thought she was the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. She was the very definition of what he was looking for in a model. One day he decided that he was going to approach her and offer her a modeling contract.
Tongeriner couldn’t believe it when Bart had told her that he wanted to make her famous; she had told him that she was more that delighted to oblige. The modeling business was all that she had imagined it to be; the glitz and the glamour were surreal. She was enjoying every bit of it but that wasn’t the best part.
The best part was getting to see Bart everyday; having him there when she as on the run way and at the fashion houses. He holding her hand and parading her at the numerous dinner parties they went to.
At first she thought she was the only one that had developed feeling for him and this scared her; she didn’t want to be the only one in love; she didn’t want to left out in the cold with a broken heart. But with time she noticed that he had fallen for her too.
“This is for you” he had said as he gave her a gift wrapped box.
“What is it?” she asked with a sweet smile as she received it.
“Open it and you will know” he said and walked away.
She eagerly opened the box and pulled out a pink flip-up that had a golden heart shaped keychain that had a small key hanging from it. She was perplexed, she looked around in the box and she found a small note. She opened up the folded piece of paper and read its contents.
It said
The phone has all the directions you need and the key will open a box you will find at your final destination; I’ll meet you there.
Bart.
She set on her quest; following the directions very carefully. When she got to her final destination she found a black jacket. She dipped her hands in the jacket pockets and retrieved a small box. She used the key on her keychain to open it and inside the box she found another key. She held it in her hands and walked towards the door that was in the room she had found the jacket it.
She pushed the key into the key hole and turned it. She heard the door click and then she turned the knob. The door opened to reveal Bart kneeling on one knee holding the most beautiful ring she had ever seen.
“Will you marry me?” he asked with a smile.
“Yes” she said with joy as he slipped the ring on her finger. She couldn’t explain the joy she was feeling. All she knew was that he was the man she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.
A month later they got married by the lake in the winter snow.

The missing lucky charm bracelet by Mirriam Njobvu
One day, Bridget was walking down the beach. After tanning herself for half an hour, she got up and returned to her small cottage for a rest. After a few good minutes of walking, she met a girl who was about six or seven who was playing with a bracelet.
She recognized the bracelet, she then looked down at her wrist and realized that her bracelet was gone. She wondered at what time the bracelet had slipped off her hand and found its way into this little’s girl tiny hands.
The bracelet clasped in the girl’s hands was actually the lucky charm bracelet that her mother had given her for her eighteenth birthday. She bent over and tried to coax the little girl into giving the bracelet back but the girl refused.
Bridget pondered over the situation for a few seconds and then an idea came to her. She would just have to distract the little girl and then retrieve the bracelet when the little girl least expected it.
“What is your name little?” she asked her gently.
“Naomi” she responded in her tiny voice.
“Do you like ice cream?”
The little girl nodded enthusiastically. Bridget smiled a generous smile before she took the little girl by the hand and led her to the ice cream stand in the distance. Bridget bought the ice cream and they ate it cheerfully, after they were done Bridget tried to get the bracelet back but the little girl was adamant.
Just then a woman walked up to them an introduced herself as Naomi’s mother. Bridget explained her dilemma to the woman who then tried to get the bracelet but to no avail. She only succeeded in making Naomi cry. Naomi’s mother then suggested that Bridget give her her address so she could bring the bracelet along later on.
Bridget handed over her contact details and left for her cottage. Later on that day she heard a knock at her front door. She rushed over and opened it. Before her stood Naomi’s mother holding the bracelet in hand.
“How did you get it” Bridget asked in delight as Naomi’s mother handed the bracelet over.
“I waited till she was asleep”
“Good thinking” Bridget said and thanked her before she left.
From that day, Bridget made sure that charm bracelet was clasped tightly around her wrist so she wouldn’t lose it again.

The girl on the mountain by Ng'onga Katema
Last week Saturday; I was seated outside thinking of committing suicide when I saw a beautiful girl standing on the mountains just a little distance away from my house. She was the most beautiful girl I have ever seen. She was dressed in a classy black jacket paired up with a beautiful black skirt.
Even though I was quite a distance away from her; I could see that she looked very sad and I wondered why she was standing there alone.
‘Maybe she was also thinking about committing suicide’ I thought to myself.
‘But why would such a beautiful girl think of doing such a thing?’ I asked myself.
It was then that I realized that I was also about to do the same thing. Just looking at her and thinking about what she was about to do made me change my mind immediately.
‘She was too beautiful to do such a thing’ I thought to myself. Then it suddenly hit me. I was also too beautiful both inside and outside to end my life in such a tragic way. My beauty was right there; shinning fourth from my heart. When she left I felt this wave of peace fall upon me.
I felt clam and tranquil and then I thought to myself,
‘The girl on the mountain was an angel sent to me from heaven to save my life.’

Nobody is better by Zeria Njobvulema
Samantha Johnson came from a rich family and she was the only girl in the family. She considered herself better than others. She was self centered and arrogant. The only thing she loved more than herself was vanilla ice cream.
One day, she went out with her friends for ice cream at the gazebo ice cream centre. This place was considered high class and only those who could afford the prices went there. When they got there she sat down at her usually table and then started yelling at a waiter close by.
“Waiter! Waiter!; how dare you ignore me and my friends over here”
The waiter quickly stopped cleaning the table he was at and rushed over to her table.
“I am sorry madam, I was just finishing up my task” the waiter responded apologetically.
“How dare you talk back” yelled Samantha before she smacked the waiter across the face.
The customers around looked at Samantha in disbelief.
“What are you looking at?” she barked at them.
She then averted her gaze to the waiter and then said
“You are not allowed to talk back, I have the…..” she begun before she froze when she saw her crush walk up to her.
“Samantha what is wrong with you? Just because you are well to do doesn’t give out the right to treat people like dirt.
She was caught off guard; she didn’t know what to say. She just stood there as she got a tongue lashing from him. As she listened to what he was saying; she felt something change in her and for the first time in a really long time, she felt remorseful for what she had done.
When he was done, she thanked him for setting her straight and then apologized to the waiter for her behavior. The waiter accepted her apology as they could see that she was being sincere. She then run out of the ice cream centre with tears rolling down her cheeks.
